WHAT is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis, a persistent and aggravating condition, impacts 31 million adults in the US. It occurs when the tissues lining the sinuses and their drainage pathways become inflamed, leading to blocked sinuses. Even with medication, symptoms often recur, significantly diminishing the quality of life for both adults and children. Sinusitis stems from various causes and presents substantial treatment challenges. At ENT & Sinus Center, we’re committed to helping you regain your health and well-being.

WHAT Causes Sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis results from a combination of factors, including but not limited to:

  • Bacteria
  • Infections
  • Allergies
  • Inflammation of the nasal lining

WHAT are Symptoms of Sinusitis?

Sinusitis can present with a range of symptoms, making it essential to consult an ENT doctor for an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan. Symptoms may include:

  • Facial pain with or without pressure around the eyes, nose, jaw and teeth
  • Fatigue due to poor sleep, resulting from nightly pain and congestion
  • Low grade fever
  • Stuffy nose from swollen nasal passages
  • Blocked nasal passageways
  • Lessened sense of smell and taste
  • Headaches
  • Postnasal drip (mucus trickling down the back of the nose into the throat)
  • Nasal discharge (green, yellow or cloudy mucus draining from the nose)

WHAT are the Different Types of Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is categorized into three main types: acute, chronic, and recurrent. While they share similar symptoms, these types differ in their duration and frequency of occurrence.

  • Acute Sinusitis: Acute sinusitis typically lasts up to four weeks and is characterized by a sudden onset of symptoms. It often develops as a result of a cold or upper respiratory infection, causing inflammation and blockage of the sinus passages.
    • Subacute Sinusitis: Subacute sinusitis lasts between four to twelve weeks, followed by symptom improvement, and presents prolonged inflammation and congestion of the sinus passages.
  • Chronic Sinusitis: Chronic sinusitis lasts for 12 weeks or longer and is characterized by persistent inflammation of the sinus passages. This condition often results in ongoing symptoms, despite medication, that can significantly impact the quality of life.
  • Recurrent Sinusitis: Recurrent sinusitis is characterized by experiencing four or more infections in a year, with periods of relief between episodes, yet the condition tends to persist despite the temporary reprieve.

WHAT are Sinusitis treatment options?

As someone dealing with sinusitis, you have a range of treatment choices available, including over-the-counter remedies and surgical procedures. Our trusted physicians will collaborate with you to identify the most suitable treatment plan for your symptoms and tackle the underlying cause of your recurring infections.

  • Medication: Depending on the severity and duration of your symptoms, our physicians may recommend various medications to relieve your discomfort, including prescriptions, over-the-counter remedies, and home treatments.
  • Balloon Sinuplasty: Balloon sinuplasty, or balloon sinus dilation, is a minimally invasive office procedure designed to address drainage issues by gently enlarging the natural openings of your sinuses using a balloon.
  • Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a viable choice for certain individuals with sinusitis. This surgical procedure enhances sinus drainage and overall function by correcting nasal anatomy, facilitating the natural flow of mucus through the expansion of sinus openings. Additionally, balloon sinuplasty can be used with FESS when necessary.
